In class today, we watched a 45 minute video on tips when filming. I learned many new ways to make my videography better, which include utilizing rule of thirds, using a microphone, as well as not filming on a autofocus camera. These three things are essential when interviewing or filming in general. Using rule of thirds makes the overall presentation more visually interesting, and get more emotions of the subject. Next, utilizing a microphone is important to get the best quality sound as possible. Lastly, an autofocus camera is not reliable because it may focus on the wrong subject, such as non relatable objects in the background.

Our assignment for today was to watch all 6 "Everybody has a story" videos, and then analyze 2 of them. I decided to take a specific look on The Middle School Football video, as well as the Boy Seeks Smile video. Both videos were very moving, and the stories were very heartfelt. More specifically, the middle school football story was significant because it was focused on a middle school football team in Olivet Michigan that had a play cooking (Hey). This team was scheming a 2 part play, one that would change the life for a special kid at their school. The first part of the play was to get as close to the goal line as possible without scoring-and the crowd was not pleased. However, there was a greater priority with this tactic, as the middle school team was saving the touchdown for their fellow peer, Keith, who has a learning disability and snuggles with boundaries (You). The team made a human shield around Kieth, and protected him while he ran over the touchdown line, and scored for his first time (See). This play was particularly important because it made Kieth feel loved and happy. This also affected not only Kieth, but his fellow teammates who went from eating about only himself, to caring about everyone and "making everyones day and everyones life" (So)
The Boy Seeks Smile story emitted an emotion because it revolved around 6 year old orphan, Jayden Hayes in Savannah Georgia, who lost both his parents at a young age (Hey). His story is so heartfelt because his plan after his parents died was to stop the sadness within the world. He wanted to make people smile. (You) Jayden carried out this plan by asking his aunt to buy a bunch of little toys, so he could hand them out to strangers in the middle of their town. These everyday people were struck, and overwhelmed with the thought of this little orphan who went about his day handing out gifts to make them smile. Some even started to cry. (See) After the death of his parents, Jayden expressed sheer joy when giving back to others, and the more people her made smile, the more this light came through. (So) I interviewed my subject, Sarah Cook, in Quincy Illinois, where our tournament took place. We did this after our last game, so it was fun to talk about our game and our team in the interview itself. In fact, our team celebrated with a McDonalds run after our win, so the interview took place in the restauraunt which was very funny. I initially intended to interview Sarah on the bus heading to Quincy, with out teammates in the back round, however the bus was too shaky to film. The interview went very smoothly however, and I learned a lot about our team. Additionally, with the editing process I had trouble choosing only 3 clips to include within the video, because Sarah said many informative things. I overall enjoyed my first interview experience because I got to talk to my good friend about the sport and team we both love.
This project we are assigned to construct and direct a 3-5 minute interview about any topic we desire. We started out by practicing filming around school, interviewing our peers to work on our skills, and becoming more comfortable directing the camera. Next, our whole class worked on one interview between the teacher, and a student. Each of us were assigned a different job, as I was the location scouter. We all worked as one to help make this interview, which helped us practice our skills and what specific details to remember when we are doing our own. By completing many practice interviews, we learned many different techniques. For example, I learned to keep the subject in one third of the frame, with the light facing the subject. Additionally, zooming in close to their face is important, as well as asserting the microphone correctly.
Filming this six word story was very fun to do because I got to play soccer with my friends at the fifth grade center. We had a good time and played on the turf. It was a beautiful sunny day as well, and the weather was very nice. Editing this video was sort of difficult due to keeping each clip 3-5 seconds. Many of my clips contained over 5 seconds, so it was a struggle cutting it down. Despite the time, it was fun putting all the videos together with the use of the titles. Also, I enjoy how high def my videos appear due to using the schools GoPro. It totally changes a video into a more appealing piece. This Six word Story all together was my favorite project so far because we got to create a story piece for the first time.I started researching about Ernest Hemingway, and the significance of six word stories. The objective of these stories is to convey an idea or opinion through only six shots. No shots can be alike, as the six shots need to be from different camera angles. Also, Ernest Hemingway was a famous novelist, short story writer, and journalist. His unique writing style heavily impacted the 20th century. The writer became world wide famous through his stories, and even won the Noble Prize in 1954. Unfortunately, Ernest committed suicide in 1962. Despite his death, the writer left a heavy impact on literature in the world.
Editing and constructing our video scavenger hunt project was surprisingly very fun! We had total freedom and could use the extent of our creativity to create a unique video with all of our clips in it. Our assignment was to include a title, filter, and transition for each clip we recorded. So consequently, our videos were a bit crazy. However, I enjoyed having our own freedom and no limit to put together an awesome project.
The video scavenger hunt helped me improve my skills as a videographer because I got to practice several different techniques to make my shots better. Specifically, I tried to incorporate Mr. Goble's comments and critiques about our previous footage, and apply them to this scavenger hunt. I tried to not place the subject of the shot in the center, but instead use rule of thirds when shooting, and also lining up the camera with a straight edge to make sure it is not crooked. I enjoyed this project because I got to talk to some teachers and staff I haven't met before, including the police officer. Also, I liked when we went into different classrooms to shoot the action going on because I enjoyed seeing my friends and teachers. The only aspect of this video scavenger hunt that didn't really appeal to me was when my partner and I had to shoot the construction site outside. This was difficult because it was freezing, and the winds were blowing hard. Nevertheless, this scavenger help me grow as a videographer, and improve my skills and knowledge.
The iAm project allowed us students to express ourselves, and give a glimpse of our lives to our peers. I chose to describe my hobies, as well as my family and friends. I expressed how I play soccer for Ladue as well as club team. Additionally, I depicted that I am a traveler, and love my famly and friends. I was successful incorporating pictures of my soccer team as well as family, however I had some difficulty inserting soccer videos from my camera roll. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed putting together a project that allowed me, as well as the other students in Broadcast Tech, to express our personality.
